What to Expect in Your Child’s First Speech Therapy Session

Knowing what you expect for your child’s first speech therapy session can help you and your child feel confident and ready to learn. In our therapy rooms you’ll find plenty of toys and therapy materials used to build rapport and help your speech therapist learn more about your child’s individual needs. A brief parent interview will help your therapist understand your child’s social and medical history, including your concerns and goals for their speech and language development. An evaluation will be conducted with standardized testing, and a brief overview of the results will come next. A rough treatment plan may be discussed at this time. It’s important for the clinician to gain you and your child’s trust in order to create a safe and fun space for learning and growing. At the end of treatment sessions, you’ll likely be called in for a quick overview, a discussion about home practice, and any demonstrations or training required for sufficient reinforcement of skills practiced in therapy. There will be ample opportunities to ask questions, and we are always here to help. We can’t wait to meet you!
